Southwest Airlines Trialing Free Wi-Fi: Will It Become Permanent?

If you’re flying Southwest Airlines in the coming days, you may be treated to free Wi-Fi. While this is only a limited time trial for the time being, I have to imagine that there’s a motive behind this…

Southwest offering free Wi-Fi August 8-14, 2025

Between August 8 and August 14, 2025, Southwest is offering all Rapid Rewards members free Wi-Fi. Rapid Rewards members will be directed to log into the portal with their account details, and can then connect for free, with no data limits or time restrictions.

For context, Southwest ordinarily charges $8 per device for Wi-Fi, so those are some nice savings. For now this is just described as a trial. For what it’s worth, it’s the second time this year that Southwest has offered such a limited time promotion. The first trial was between May 1 and May 5, 2025, and with that trial, all passengers received free Wi-Fi, with no requirement to actually be a Rapid Rewards member.

I assume that Southwest is assessing how well bandwidth keeps up with demand when all passengers have access to free Wi-Fi, vs. just Rapid Rewards members. I also imagine the company is analyzing how many Rapid Rewards sign-ups this drives, and how it impacts customer satisfaction on flights over this period.

Southwest is trialing free inflight Wi-Fi

Southwest will eventually offer free Wi-Fi permanently

The airline industry is clearly headed in the direction of widespread free Wi-Fi. Just looking at the US airline industry, JetBlue has offered free Wi-Fi for years, Delta offers free Wi-Fi on most flights, American will offer free Wi-Fi as of early 2026, and United will offer free Wi-Fi once it introduces Starlink.

So Southwest introducing free Wi-Fi is a question of when, not if. The monetization of Wi-Fi has changed, in the sense that as it becomes free, it’s about increasing loyalty program sign-ups, since those customers are easier to monetize.

I imagine that with Southwest, the challenge is the bandwidth the airline currently has available. Southwest historically had Anuvu Wi-Fi, and it has both a legacy system and an upgraded system. Now the airline is starting to introduce Viasat Wi-Fi.

With Viasat, the bandwidth is there to offer free Wi-Fi, while the Anuvu system continues to be the issue. It’s not entirely clear to me what the current fleet breakdown is for Anuvu vs. Viasat.

Either way, if Southwest decides not to introduce free Wi-Fi on a permanent basis by early next year, then I imagine it’s because the airline decides it just doesn’t have the bandwidth to offer this reliably.

Southwest’s newer planes have Viasat Wi-Fi

Bottom line

Rapid Rewards members flying Southwest between August 8 and August 14, 2025, can receive free inflight Wi-Fi. This follows a trial earlier in the year, where free Wi-Fi was available to all passengers. This is a nice short term perk, but more importantly, I think it’s a sign of things to come. The question will just be whether Southwest’s current Wi-Fi capabilities can handle the demand.

What do you make of the prospect of Southwest introducing free Wi-Fi on a permanent basis?
